" Every 1
Reads " Award
Lighthouse is one of 20 Community Organizations to receive the
"Every 1 Reads","
Making
the Difference Award" at a special ceremony,
November 19. Lighthouse was chosen to receive the award by a
group composed of Dr. Sheldon Berman of JCPS, Mayor Jerry
Abramson, CEO`s of Metro
United
Way, Greater Louisville, Inc., Chamber of Commerce, etc.
Lighthouse has been an endorsed
site for Every 1 Reads since the program was set up in 2004.
Dr. Berman showed
statistics indicating
reading
scores have improved substantially within JCPS since the program
was started 7 years ago.
Dr. Berman & Mayor Abramson in their presentations indicated that
Every 1 Reads will continue to be the main emphasis for Metro
Louisville for the next five years and in combination with this
will be increased emphasis on children`s ability to write effectively.
Every 1 Reads is a bold community-wide effort to have every child in
Jefferson County Public Schools reading at or above grade level. Every
1 Reads helps children become better readers. The number of children
reading below grade level is now approximately 8.5 percent - down from
nearly 20 percent before the Every 1 Reads initiative started.
